(USA) — Bohemia Interactive Simulations (BISim), a global developer of advanced simulation and training software with its origins in video game development, announces the release of Gears Studio, a new integrated development environment that streamlines the creation of modular software products. Gears Studio guides software developers through component development, automates tasks, and establishes a standard for components that enables powerful functionality and reuse across products.
BISim is releasing a free version of Gears Studio Community Edition, available now online at www.gears.studio. Gears Studio offers simple project configuration, dependency package management, source control integration, and assistance with the creation of APIs. In short, Gears Studio helps developers focus their time on feature implementation.
Gears can be used to build anything developers can create using C++ such as videos games, web browsers, word processing software or simulations―anything developers want to build in a more modular fashion. Gears components are built in C++ and use C APIs to communicate between them. In future releases of Gears Studio, BISim plans to extend its capabilities to allow use of other programming languages like Lua, C# and Python.

Gears Studio began as an internal BISim tool and is based on BISim’s Gears software development framework, an open and modular framework for building software applications. Gears enables users to more easily connect many dynamic linked libraries in a standardized way to increase programming effectiveness and efficiency. A dynamic linked library is compiled source code that provides some function or capability, which connects to an application via an API. Dynamic linked libraries are a common part of any Windows-based software application.
BISim previously released Gear Studio Professional Edition as part of its VBS Simulation SDK and VBS IG SDK products. These software developer kits enable customization of VBS3, BISim’s flagship simulation software, and VBS Blue IG, BISim’s high-performance, whole-earth image generator. The Gears Studio Professional Edition is a licensed product and includes additional features such as integration with JFrog Artifactory to version and distribute products, components and APIs, the ability to clone component source code to the product development directory, and the ability to allow users to sign components with a trusted certificate for use by secure applications.
