Recap of VBS Tech Conference Day 3 - Powerful Dev Tools for Integrators

Apr 30, 2020

0:00 - 1:45

BISim’s Mark Dzulko, Advisor to the Board-Technology, led the 3rd and final day’s sessions of the VBS Technology Conference. Day 3 was geared toward systems integrators and gave attendees a closer look at the flexible and powerful SDKs used to create custom solutions using VBS4, VBS3 and VBS Blue IG. Watch the Day 3 replay on Youtube.

1:46 - 24:14

Ryan Binns, BISim’s SDKs Lead, kicked off the session by providing an overview and demo of Gears Studio, VBS Simulation SDK and VBS IG SDK. These products give developers direct access to the simulation and rendering engines of VBS3, VBS4 and VBS Blue IG. While there are common APIs between both SDKs, Ryan also highlighted the differences between the two SDKs: VBS IG SDK is most commonly used to customize sensors, XR integrations, symbology and multiple viewports; VBS Simulation SDK is typical used to customize AI behaviors, HTML UI overlays, mission/scenario control and AAR.

Ryan demoed the creation of components using Gears Studio, noting that new components created with Gears Studio don’t require recompilation and are compatible with future versions of VBS. Ryan demoed a sample LIDAR sensor API created in just 3 days using Gears Studio and the SDKs.

24:24 - 30:59

Mark Dzulko then demonstrated his integration of PedSim, a third-party microscopic pedestrian crowd simulation library, to provide an example of how users can bring in third-party content. The PedSim demo showed 2500 civilian AI entities moving along a 6 block area of San Francisco in VBS Blue IG. Mark showed how to quickly change and reload components on the fly to update the simulation.

31:00 - 39:58

BISim’s XR developer Tim Turcich emphasized connecting the IG to the real world. Tim noted that VBS Blue IG supports a wide variety of modern XR hardware HMDs and their controllers out of the box like Varjo’s VR-1, VREngineers XTAL, the Valve Index, Vive Pro Eye and Oculus Rift. Tim revealed augmented reality work Close Air Solutions has been doing with BISim’s VBS Blue IG on Hyper Real Immersion. The demo showed virtual vehicles driving in a real scene and the real building generating a shadow on the virtual truck. Being able to align the virtual terrain with the real world is what makes this possible. (Thanks to Close Air Support for sharing their work!)

40:30 - 50:50

Julian Saenger, BISim’s Manager of Tools, unveiled BISIm’s new Model Exchanger, which offers a simplified and faster process for content import in VBS4. The Model Exchanger provides a set-up assistant, VBS compatibility check, instant bug fixing, error reporting, and fast level-of-detail generation. With the the new Model Exchanger development time is cut in half, according to Julian.

51:00 - 58:41

BISim’s final speaker Yuri Dobronravin, general director of DB Logika, a BISim reseller in Ukraine, presented several training solutions created using BISim’s SDKs and VBS3. Yuri first demonstrated a mortar simulation that used a real mortar with an attached replica and simulated optical sight for the Ukrainian Army. Trainees were able to practice the loading and firing procedures while watching virtual rounds land on a projected screen of VBS3. Using BISim’s SDKs, Logika was also able to create a squad shooting range simulator using weapon replicas and position trackers to allow users to stand, kneel or go prone in the simulation or hide behind objects display in the portal. The project was produced in 5 weeks and in another 8 weeks was refined and now in use for training.

Thanks to all who attended. Special thanks to Close Air Solutions and DB Logika for their contributions.
